King George Island is the largest of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica. It is located in the Southern Ocean, approximately 120 kilometers off the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The island is roughly 95 kilometers long and has an area of roughly 2,150 square kilometers.
King George Island is home to several research stations operated by various countries, including Argentina, Chile, China, South Korea, Peru, Russia, and Uruguay. The island is also home to the largest penguin colony in Antarctica, with an estimated population of over 1.5 million.
The island was discovered in 1819 by the British explorer William Smith, who named it after King George III of England. In the early 20th century, the island was claimed by the British, Chilean, and Argentine governments.

King George Island in Antarctica experiences a harsh and cold climate throughout the year with temperatures rarely rising above freezing. In the summer months (December to February), temperatures can reach up to 0°C and the days are longer, but the sea ice remains frozen. In the autumn (March to May), temperatures drop and snowfall increases. Winters (June to August) are extremely cold with temperatures below -20°C, accompanied by strong winds and blizzards. Spring (September to November) brings a slight warming, with temperatures rising to around -10°C, and the sea ice begins to break up.
