Groote Eylandt is an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is the largest island in the gulf and is located east of Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory. It is the homeland of the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the island.
Groote Eylandt measures about 50 km from east to west, and is 25 km from north to south. It is separated from the mainland by the Gulf of Carpentaria and is about 600 km east of Darwin. The island is largely flat and low-lying, with an average elevation of just 10 m. The highest point is the summit of Mt. Doreen, which is about 163 m above sea level.
The island is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including wallabies, goannas, crocodiles, and many species of birds. The Anindilyakwa people have lived on the island for thousands of years and continue to practice their traditional lifestyle.
