Jar Island is an island located off the coast of Australia in the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is part of the Northern Territory and is located approximately 50 kilometres from the mainland. It is one of the most remote islands in the world and is home to a small Aboriginal community.
The island is approximately 15 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide. It is covered in tropical rainforest and is home to a variety of wildlife, including sea turtles, dugongs, and various species of birds. The island is also home to a unique species of palm tree, the Jar Island palm.
Jar Island has a long history of human habitation. Archaeological evidence suggests that it was first inhabited by Aboriginal people over 40,000 years ago. It was later visited by Dutch and British explorers in the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the 19th century it was used as a base for trepang fishing.
In the late 19th century, the island was leased by the British government to the Australian-based company, Burns Philp & Co. The company established a trading post on the island and began trading with the local Aboriginal people.
In the early 20th century, the island was used as a military base by the Australian government during World War I and II. During this time, a number of military installations were built on the island, including a wireless station and an airstrip.
Today, Jar Island is still home to a small Aboriginal community and is popular among tourists. It is a great place to explore the unique wildlife and vegetation of the island, as well as its rich cultural heritage.
