Mornington Island is a remote island located in the Gulf of Carpentaria, in the far north of Queensland, Australia. It is the largest of 22 islands in the Wellesley Islands group, and is home to the Kunibidji Aboriginal people, who are the traditional custodians of the land.
The island is approximately 70 km long and 20 km wide, and is surrounded by the waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Indian Ocean. It is a low-lying island, with an average elevation of just 10 metres. The island is fringed by mangroves and is covered with a variety of vegetation, including eucalyptus, casuarina trees and melaleuca.
The first European to explore the island was Captain Phillip Parker King in 1819. The Kunibidji people were also visited by missionaries in the late 19th century, and in the 1930s the government established a Lutheran mission on the island.
The island is a popular holiday destination, with its beautiful beaches, fishing and boating opportunities, and its unique wildlife. It is home to a variety of bird species, including the rare white-breasted sea eagle, and is a sanctuary for dugongs, turtles and dolphins.
In the past, the island has been the site of a number of important historical events. In 1936, the Kunibidji people signed a Deed of Grant in Trust, which gave them title to their land. In the 1970s, the island was the site of a major Aboriginal land rights campaign, which resulted in the granting of native title to the Kunibidji people in 1985.
Today, Mornington Island is an important cultural and spiritual centre for the Kunibidji people, and a popular destination for tourists and visitors. With its stunning scenery, vibrant culture and rich history, Mornington Island is one of Australia’s most unique and beautiful destinations.
