Seal Island

Seal Island is an island located off the coast of South Australia, approximately 20 kilometres south of the town of Victor Harbor. It is the largest of the group of islands known as the Pages, which form part of the Encounter Marine Park. The island is approximately 1.2 kilometres long and 0.5 kilometres wide, with a total area of 0.6 square kilometres. It is mostly composed of granite, and is home to a large colony of Australian sea lions.

The island was first sighted by Matthew Flinders in 1802 during his circumnavigation of Australia. In 1803, the island was named Seal Island by Nicolas Baudin, who also named nearby Granite Island. Seal Island was used by sealers during the 19th century, and the remains of a number of structures from this period are still visible on the island.

Seal Island has been the site of several important historical events. In 1836, the island was the site of the first recorded meeting between Europeans and Australian Aborigines. In 1915, the island was the site of the first successful landing of a seaplane in Australia.

Today, Seal Island is a popular tourist destination, with visitors able to view the sea lion colony from the shore. The island is also a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkelling, with a number of shipwrecks located in the surrounding waters. The island is also home to a variety of bird species, including the white-bellied sea eagle and the osprey.
