Yirrkala

Yirrkala is a small Aboriginal community located in the Northern Territory of Australia, approximately 700km east of Darwin. It lies on the edge of the Arafura Sea, in the Arnhem Land region of the Top End.

Yirrkala was first established as a mission in 1935 by the Methodist Church of Australia. The mission was originally intended to provide a place of education and work for Aboriginal people, and to teach them Christianity. It wasn’t until 1971 that the community was handed over to the local Aboriginal people, and it has been under their control ever since.

Yirrkala is home to the Yolngu people, an Aboriginal group who have lived in the area for thousands of years. The Yolngu people have a rich culture and history, and their traditional lands are home to a variety of plants and animals, including the endangered flatback turtle.

The Yolngu people are also known for their art, which is often inspired by their traditional stories and beliefs. Yirrkala is home to the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre, which houses a large collection of Aboriginal art and artifacts.

Yirrkala is also home to the Yirrkala Bark Petitions, which were presented to the Australian Government in 1963. The petitions were written on bark, and were a protest against the mining of bauxite on Yolngu land. The petitions are now seen as a significant milestone in the fight for Aboriginal rights, and are now housed in the National Museum of Australia.

The Yirrkala community is a vibrant and welcoming place, and is an important part of the Northern Territory’s history and culture. It is home to a variety of businesses, including a school, health clinic, and store. It is also an important cultural centre, and is home to a variety of festivals and events throughout the year.
