Ostend is a coastal city in the province of West Flanders in Belgium. It is located in the northwest of the country, on the North Sea, and is the largest city in the province. It is a major tourist destination, with a population of around 70,000.
Ostend has a long history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Stone Age. It was first mentioned in a document in 1138, and became a major port in the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, Ostend was an important trading centre and was home to many merchants and traders. In the 17th century, it was a major naval base and the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company.
The city is located on a flat plain, with a large harbour and a long beach. It is surrounded by dunes and wetlands, and is known for its mild climate. The city centre is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Town Hall, the City Hall, the Church of St. Peter and the Belfry of Ostend.
