Nain

Nain is a small Inuit community located on the northern coast of Labrador in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is the northernmost settlement in the province, and is the administrative centre for the Nunatsiavut region. Nain is situated on the shore of Nain Bay, a deep, sheltered harbour on the Labrador Sea. The population of Nain is 1,424 as of 2016, making it the largest community in the Nunatsiavut region.

The land around Nain is home to a variety of wildlife, including caribou, polar bears, foxes, wolves, and seals. The community is also known for its traditional Inuit culture and language, which is still spoken by many of the town's residents. The Inuit have occupied the area for thousands of years, and archaeological evidence suggests that the area has been inhabited since at least the 17th century.

Nain was the site of a major battle between the Inuit and the Moravian missionaries in the 19th century. The Moravians had established a mission in Nain in 1771, and the Inuit were hostile to the missionaries’ presence. In 1818, the Inuit were driven out of Nain by the Moravians and their allies, the Hudson’s Bay Company. The Inuit returned in 1823 and the Moravians left the following year.

Nain is now a thriving community, with a variety of businesses and services, including a hospital, a library, and a museum. The town is also home to a number of cultural and recreational activities, including traditional Inuit games and sports, as well as a variety of outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, fishing, and hunting.
