Prince Leopold Island is an uninhabited island located in the Arctic Archipelago of Canada. It is situated in the Queen Elizabeth Islands, off the northwestern coast of Baffin Island. The island is approximately 7 km (4.3 mi) long and 5 km (3.1 mi) wide, with an area of approximately 35 km2 (14 sq mi).
Prince Leopold Island was named after Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who was the uncle of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. The island was first sighted by Europeans in 1851 during an expedition led by British explorer Robert McClure. The island was later visited by the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-76, led by George Nares, and the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-18, led by Vilhjalmur Stefansson.
The island is home to a variety of wildlife, including polar bears, arctic foxes, and various species of seabirds. It is also an important breeding ground for seabirds, including the common eider, black guillemot, and northern fulmar.
Prince Leopold Island is also home to a variety of archaeological sites, including Inuit hunting camps and Thule culture sites. In addition, the island has a rich cultural history, with evidence of Inuit occupation dating back thousands of years.
