Resolute Bay is a small hamlet located on the south coast of Cornwallis Island, Nunavut, Canada. It is the most northerly community in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. With a population of 250 people, it is the second-largest settlement in Nunavut, after Iqaluit.
Resolute Bay is situated in a region of the Arctic known as the High Arctic, and is located approximately 810 km north of the Arctic Circle. The terrain is mostly flat, with the occasional rocky outcrop, and is surrounded by the Arctic tundra. The climate is cold and dry, with temperatures ranging from -25°C in winter to 8°C in summer.
Resolute Bay has a long history of human habitation, with archaeological evidence of human activity dating back over 4,000 years. In the mid-1800s, the area was used by whalers, who established a trading post in the area. In 1947, the Canadian government established a weather station in the area, and in 1953, the first permanent settlement was established.
The hamlet is home to a number of important historical sites, including the remains of a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) base and the Resolute Bay Airport. The RCAF base was built in the 1950s and served as a staging point for military and scientific expeditions in the High Arctic. The Resolute Bay Airport was built in the 1960s and is the northernmost airport in Canada.
