Sala y Gómez Island is a Chilean island located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, approximately 890 km (553 mi) off the coast of Chile. It is the easternmost island in the Juan Fernández Archipelago, and the only one with a permanent population. The island is roughly triangular in shape and covers an area of approximately 7 km2 (2.7 sq mi).
The island is home to a small fishing village, San Juan Bautista, which is the only permanent settlement on the island. The population of the island is approximately 100 people, most of whom are of European descent. The main economic activity on the island is fishing, and the island is also home to a small tourism industry.
The island was discovered by Spanish sailor Juan Fernández in 1574, and was later named after him. In 1750, the island was annexed by the Spanish Empire, and it remained under Spanish control until its independence in 1818.
In 1877, the Chilean government declared Sala y Gómez Island a national park, making it the first national park in Chile. The park is home to a variety of animal species, including the Juan Fernández fur seal and the Juan Fernández firecrown hummingbird.
In 1966, the Chilean government declared the island a nature reserve, making it one of the most protected areas in the country. The island is also home to a number of archaeological sites, including the remains of a Spanish fort built in the 1700s.
