Omoa

Omoa is a commune located in the Windward Islands of French Polynesia. It is part of the administrative subdivision of the Tuamotu-Gambier Islands. The commune of Omoa consists of the islands of Niau, Omoa, Tatakoto, and Vahanga. It is located approximately 1000 kilometers northeast of Tahiti and is part of the Tuamotu Archipelago.

The commune of Omoa is a small, sparsely populated atoll with a total population of just over 200 people. The main settlement is located on the island of Omoa, which is the largest of the four islands. The other islands are smaller and less populated. The main industries of the commune are fishing and copra production.

The climate of Omoa is tropical, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The islands are surrounded by a rich coral reef and there are several beautiful beaches and lagoons. The islands are also home to a variety of bird species, including the red-footed booby, the white-tailed tropicbird, and the red-tailed tropicbird.

The history of Omoa is closely linked to the history of French Polynesia. In 1767, the French explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville visited the islands and named them after his ship, the “Omoa”. In 1842, the islands were annexed by France and became part of the French protectorate of Polynesia. During the Second World War, the islands were occupied by the Japanese and used as a base for their operations in the Pacific. After the war, the islands were returned to French control.

Today, Omoa is a quiet and peaceful commune. It is a popular destination for tourists looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday. The islands are known for their beautiful beaches, stunning lagoons, and abundant marine life. There are several small hotels and guesthouses available for visitors, as well as a variety of restaurants and shops. The islands are also home to a number of historical sites, including the ruins of an old fort and a lighthouse.
