Helgoland is an island in the North Sea located off the coast of Germany. It is located in the Schleswig-Holstein region, approximately 30 km northwest of Cuxhaven. The island is about 1.2 km long and 0.4 km wide. It is the only German island in the North Sea and is considered to be a part of the North Frisian Islands.

Helgoland has been inhabited since the Stone Age, and it was first mentioned in written records in 804. During the Middle Ages, it was used as a base for smuggling and privateering.
