Rhodos

Rhodos is an island in Greece located in the Aegean Sea. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and is located just off the coast of Turkey. It is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and its rich history.

The island of Rhodos is roughly triangular in shape and covers an area of 1,400 square kilometers. It is the fourth largest island in Greece. The terrain of the island is mostly mountainous and is home to the highest peak in the Dodecanese, Mount Attavyros at 1,216 meters. The coastline is mostly rocky with many coves and sandy beaches.

Rhodos has a long and rich history. It was first inhabited in the Neolithic period and was later colonized by the Dorians. In the 5th century BC, it became part of the Athenian Empire. It was conquered by the Romans in the 2nd century BC and later by the Byzantines in the 6th century. The island was then conquered by the Knights of St. John in 1309 and remained under their control until 1522 when it was taken by the Ottomans. Rhodos was then occupied by the Italians in 1912 and was finally liberated by the British in 1945.

Today, Rhodos is a popular tourist destination. It is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and its rich history. The island is also home to many ancient ruins, including the Acropolis of Lindos, the Temple of Apollo, and the Colossus of Rhodos. Many visitors also come to explore the medieval old town of Rhodos, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
