Ross Island

Ross Island is a small island located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. It is situated in the Bay of Bengal, about 3 km to the east of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The island is about 2.5 km long and 0.5 km wide, with an area of 2.5 sq km.

The island was named after the British marine surveyor, Daniel Ross, who discovered it in 1788. Initially, it was used as a penal settlement for Indian freedom fighters during the British Raj. In 1858, the British established a penal settlement on the island, which was abandoned in 1883.

In 1941, the Japanese occupied Ross Island and renamed it ‘Kaigan Shima’. They constructed a harbour and a radio station, and built several buildings, including a hospital and a power station. The Japanese maintained control of the island until 1945, when the British regained control of it.

After the war, the Indian government took control of the island and established a naval base. In 1979, the island was declared a wildlife sanctuary. Today, the island is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, monkeys, and a variety of birds.

Ross Island is a popular tourist destination, with a number of historical buildings and monuments. It is home to the ruins of the British colonial buildings, such as a church, a cemetery, and a post office.
