Izu-Oshima

Izu-Oshima is an island located in the Izu archipelago in the Philippine Sea, about 100 kilometers south of Tokyo, Japan. It is the largest island in the archipelago and is part of Tokyo Prefecture. It is a volcanic island, with a total area of about 73 square kilometers, and a population of approximately 13,000 people.

The island is known for its lush, subtropical vegetation, with its highest peak, Miharayama, reaching an elevation of 854 meters. The island is also home to a number of hot springs, making it a popular destination for tourists.

The island has a long and varied history, with evidence of human settlements as early as the Jomon period (14,000–400 BCE). During the Edo period (1603–1868), the island served as a place of exile for political prisoners. During World War II, the island was used as a base for the Japanese Imperial Navy.

Today, the island is a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to enjoy its beautiful scenery and hot springs. There are also a number of festivals and events held throughout the year, including the Oshima Festival in August and the Oshima Fire Festival in November.

In addition to its natural beauty, Izu-Oshima is also home to a number of historic sites, such as the ruins of the old castle, the ruins of a Shinto shrine, and the ruins of a Buddhist temple. These sites are reminders of the island's long and varied history, and are popular attractions for visitors.
