Kolonia

Kolonia is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia, located on the island of Pohnpei in the Pacific Ocean. It is a small town of approximately 4,000 people, and is the main center of government, education, and commerce for the entire nation.

Kolonia is situated in the western part of Pohnpei, on the eastern side of the island’s main harbor, Kolonia Bay. The town is surrounded by lush rainforest, and is located near the peak of the island’s highest mountain, Mount Nanlaud.

Kolonia was first settled by the Spanish in the late 1700s, and was originally called Madolenihmw. The town was later renamed Kolonia in 1885, after the Spanish colonial capital of the Caroline Islands. During the Spanish colonial period, Kolonia served as the administrative center of the region, and the Spanish built a number of churches and other buildings in the town.

In 1899, the German Empire took control of the Caroline Islands, and Kolonia became the capital of the German colony. During this period, the town grew in size and infrastructure, and the German colonial government built a number of public buildings, including a hospital and a school.

In 1914, Japan took control of the Caroline Islands, and Kolonia became the capital of the Japanese South Seas Mandate. The Japanese built a number of public works projects in the town, including a new port and an airport. After World War II, the United States took control of the Caroline Islands, and Kolonia became the capital of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.

In 1979, the Federated States of Micronesia was formed, and Kolonia became the capital of the new nation. Since then, the town has continued to grow and develop, and is now a vibrant center of government, education, and commerce.
