Pomene is a small town located in the Gaza Province of Mozambique. It lies on the Indian Ocean coast, approximately 300 kilometres north of the provincial capital of Xai-Xai. The town is surrounded by the Pomene National Reserve, a protected area of mangrove forests, wetlands, and coastal dunes. The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including the rare African wild dog.
Pomene was founded in the early 19th century by the Portuguese, who were looking to expand their colonial empire.
