Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands and is located in the province of South Holland. It is situated in the west of the country, on the banks of the Nieuwe Maas river, which flows into the North Sea. It is a major port city, and the largest in Europe.

It was a major center of the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century, and a major port for the Dutch East India Company. During this time, it became the largest port in the world.

In 1940, Rotterdam was heavily bombed by the Germans during World War II. This destroyed much of the city, but it was quickly rebuilt, and today is a modern, vibrant city. It is a major financial center, and is home to the world’s largest port.
