Darién National Park is a large protected area located in the easternmost part of Panama, near the border with Colombia. It is the largest national park in Central America, covering an area of 5,400 square kilometers. The park is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, including the endangered Baird’s tapir, jaguar, and harpy eagle. It also contains several important archaeological sites, including the remains of a pre-Columbian trading center.
The park is located in the Darién Gap, a large swath of tropical rainforest that is home to some of the most remote and untouched areas of the region. The terrain is rugged and largely inaccessible, making it difficult to explore. The area is also home to several indigenous tribes, including the Emberá and Wounaan people.
The park has a long and rich history, having been inhabited by indigenous people for thousands of years. In the 16th century, it was the site of the first European settlement in the Americas, and was also the site of several battles during the Spanish-American War of 1898. In the late 19th century, the area was the site of a failed attempt to build a transcontinental railroad.
Today, Darién National Park is a popular destination for ecotourism, and is home to a number of research and conservation projects. It is also part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor, a network of protected areas stretching from Mexico to Panama. The park is managed by the Panamanian government and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
