Novaya Zemlya is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean in northern Russia. It is located off the northern coast of the Kola Peninsula and is separated from the mainland by the Kara Sea. The archipelago is composed of two large islands, Severny and Yuzhny, as well as several smaller islands. The highest point is Mount Karpinsky at 1,569 m (5,146 ft).

Novaya Zemlya was first discovered by Russian explorers in the 16th century. The islands were used as a base for hunting and fishing, and later as a base for whaling. During the Cold War, the islands were used as a nuclear testing site. From 1955 to 1990, the Soviet Union conducted over 100 nuclear tests on the archipelago, including the largest underground detonation ever recorded. This test, known as the Tsar Bomba, was the most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated.

In 1993, Novaya Zemlya was designated a nature reserve. Today, the islands are home to a variety of wildlife, including polar bears, reindeer, and walruses. The archipelago is also known for its spectacular scenery, with mountains, glaciers, and tundra.

In the winter, temperatures drop to an average of -20°C and can even reach as low as -50°C. Summers are milder, with temperatures ranging from 3°C to 15°C, but still remain cool. Precipitation is generally low, with most of it falling during the summer months. Snowfall is frequent during the winter months, while the spring and fall months are generally dry.
