Ascension

Ascension is an island located in the South Atlantic Ocean and is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. It is situated around 1,000 miles from the coast of Africa and 1,400 miles from the coast of South America. The island is volcanic in origin and measures just 34 square miles in area.

Ascension was discovered by the Portuguese in 1501, but it was not permanently settled until the early 1800s. In 1815, the island was used as a strategic base for the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. During this time, it served as a way station for ships traveling between Europe and the West Indies. In 1821, the island became a permanent part of the British Empire and was used as a coaling station and naval base.

In 1922, the island was leased to the United States and used as a base for the operation of transatlantic flights. During World War II, the island was used as a base for the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Force. In the 1950s, the island was used as a base for the United States Space Program and was the launch site for the first American satellite.

Today, Ascension is a popular tourist destination. It is home to a variety of wildlife including sea turtles, seabirds, and dolphins. The island also features a variety of archaeological sites, including the ruins of the British settlement at Georgetown. The island is also home to a number of historic buildings, including the Church of the Ascension and the Governor's House.
