Isle of Noss

The Isle of Noss is a small island located in the Shetland Islands of Great Britain, off the northern coast of Scotland. It is part of the Shetland Islands Council and is situated between the islands of Bressay and Mousa. The island is roughly 1.2 miles long and 0.6 miles wide, and is home to a variety of wildlife and vegetation.

The island is known for its impressive cliffs, which reach up to 400 feet in height, and its abundance of seabirds. A variety of species of birds, including puffins, guillemots, skuas, and kittiwakes, can be seen on the island. Noss also has a large population of grey seals, which can often be seen hauled out on the shoreline.

The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and evidence of Iron Age settlements can be found on the island. In the late 19th century, the island was used as a base for whaling and fishing operations, and the remains of a whaling station can still be seen today.

In the early 20th century, the island was bought by a wealthy landowner and turned into a wildlife reserve. The reserve is now managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and is a popular destination for birdwatchers.

In the 1970s, the island was the site of a major archaeological excavation which uncovered evidence of a Viking settlement. It is believed that the settlement dates back to the late 9th century and was occupied by Norse settlers.

Today, the island is an important part of the Shetland Islands’ cultural heritage, and is a popular destination for visitors who are interested in exploring the island’s history and wildlife.
