Isle of Portland

The Isle of Portland is a limestone tied island off the south coast of England in the county of Dorset. It is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway and is home to the historic Portland Harbour. The island is a popular tourist destination due to its stunning scenery, rich history and diverse wildlife.

At around five miles long and two miles wide, Portland is the largest island in the English Channel. The island is made up of two distinct parts; the northern part is known as Portland Bill and is made up of steep cliffs and rocky headlands, while the southern part is much flatter and is home to the villages of Easton and Weston.

Portland has a rich history, dating back to the Iron Age when it was inhabited by the Durotriges tribe. During the Roman occupation of Britain, the island was used as a quarry for the production of stone used in the construction of Hadrian's Wall. Portland then became an important port during the Anglo-Saxon period, before becoming a centre for the production of Purbeck marble in the 13th century.

In the 18th century, Portland became the site of the Royal Navy's Portland Harbour, which was used as a base for the British fleet during the Napoleonic Wars. During the Second World War, the harbour was used as a base for the Royal Navy's submarines.

Today, Portland is a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming to enjoy the stunning scenery, explore the island's history, and take part in a range of outdoor activities such as walking, cycling, sailing and fishing. The island is also home to a variety of wildlife, including the rare red squirrel and a large population of seabirds.
