The Isle of Portland is a limestone tied island off the south coast of England in the county of Dorset. It is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway and is home to the historic Portland Harbour. At around five miles long and two miles wide, Portland is the largest island in the English Channel. Portland has a rich history, dating back to the Iron Age when it was inhabited by the Durotriges tribe. During the Roman occupation of Britain, the island was used as a quarry for the production of stone used in the construction of Hadrian's Wall. Portland then became an important port during the Anglo-Saxon period, before becoming a centre for the production of Purbeck marble in the 13th century.

In the 18th century, Portland became the site of the Royal Navy's Portland Harbour, which was used as a base for the British fleet during the Napoleonic Wars. During the Second World War, the harbour was used as a base for the Royal Navy's submarines.
