Staffa Island

Staffa Island is a small island off the west coast of Scotland in Great Britain. It is part of the Inner Hebrides and lies in the Firth of Lorn, around 10 miles west of the Isle of Mull. The island is about 1 mile long and half a mile wide and is made up of basalt columns, which are the result of ancient volcanic activity. It has been uninhabited since the 19th century and is now a popular tourist destination.

The island was first recorded in the 6th century and was named after a Viking leader, Stafr. It was later used by various clans to store their cattle. In the 18th century, the island became a popular tourist destination due to its unique geology and natural beauty. In 1772, the composer Joseph Haydn visited the island and was inspired to write his famous piece, “Fingal’s Cave”.

In the 19th century, the island was used to mine guano, which was used as a fertiliser. In 1846, the island was purchased by the British government and in 1957 it was designated as a National Nature Reserve.

Today, the island is a popular tourist destination and is home to a variety of wildlife, including puffins, seals, and dolphins. Visitors can take boat trips to the island to explore the unique geological features and take in the stunning views. There are also guided walks available, which provide an insight into the island’s history and culture.
