Ureparapara is an island located in the Banks Islands group in the Republic of Vanuatu. It lies approximately 120 km northeast of the capital of Port Vila. It is the largest of the Banks Islands and is about 10 km long and 6 km wide, with a total area of about 28 km2.
The island is mostly covered by tropical rainforest, with a few small villages scattered along the coast. The population of Ureparapara is about 500 people, mostly Melanesian, and the main language is Bislama. The main economic activities on the island are subsistence fishing and gardening.
The first recorded sighting of Ureparapara was in 1768 by British navigator Philip Carteret. The island was later visited by the British explorer Captain James Cook in 1774, and later by the French navigator Louis de Bougainville in 1768.
Ureparapara was the site of a major battle between the French and British forces in 1809. The British forces, led by Captain William Bligh, were trying to capture the island, but the French forces, led by Captain Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier, successfully defended it. This battle is commemorated on the island with a monument.
Ureparapara is also known for its unique geological features. The island is made up of two volcanic cones, and the area around the summit of the larger cone is home to a variety of rare endemic plants. The island is also surrounded by coral reefs, making it a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.
