Ureparapara was the site of a major battle between the French and British forces in 1809. The British forces, led by Captain William Bligh, were trying to capture the island, but the French forces, led by Captain Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier, successfully defended it. This battle is commemorated on the island with a monument.

Ureparapara is also known for its unique geological features. The island is made up of two volcanic cones, and the area around the summit of the larger cone is home to a variety of rare endemic plants.
