Sept-Îles

Sept-Îles is a city located in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec, Canada. It is situated on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, on the eastern side of the mouth of the Sept-Îles River. The city is the largest urban centre in the region and is home to a population of around 23,000 people.

Sept-Îles is located on the traditional territory of the Innu people, who have inhabited the area since time immemorial. The city was first settled in the late 17th century by French fur traders, who named the area Sept-Îles due to the seven islands located in the harbour. The area was then settled by British Loyalists in the late 18th century, and the town was officially founded in 1845.

Sept-Îles is a major port city and is home to one of the busiest ports in Quebec. It is also the regional centre for the Côte-Nord region and is home to a number of industries, including fishing, mining, and forestry. The city is also home to a number of cultural attractions, including the Musée de la Mer, the Musée de la Côte-Nord, and the Centre d’Art de Sept-Îles.

Sept-Îles has a rich history, with a number of important events taking place in the city. In the late 19th century, the city was the site of a major battle between the French and the British, which resulted in the French victory. In the early 20th century, the city was the site of a major labour strike, which resulted in the establishment of the Union des Travailleurs de Sept-Îles. In the late 20th century, the city was the site of the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, which resulted in the establishment of the Nunavik region.
