Alejandro Selkirk is an island located off the coast of Chile in the South Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world, located about 400 miles west of the mainland of Chile, and about 2,000 miles from the coast of Peru. The island is roughly triangular in shape, measuring about 4.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide, with an area of about 11 square miles. It is composed of two main volcanic peaks, with a total elevation of 1,800 feet.
The island is named after the Scottish sailor, Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on the island in 1704. Selkirk had been part of a privateer expedition that was shipwrecked off the coast of Chile, and he chose to remain on the island rather than risk returning to sea. Selkirk was rescued in 1709, and his story inspired the novel Robinson Crusoe.
The island is home to a small population of about 70 people, mostly fishermen and their families. It has no electricity or running water, and the inhabitants rely on fishing and subsistence farming for their livelihood. The island is also home to a variety of wildlife, including sea lions, dolphins, and a variety of sea birds.
In the late 19th century, the island was annexed by Chile and became part of the Chilean province of Valparaíso. During World War II, the island was used as a base for the Chilean Air Force, and in the late 1960s, the Chilean Navy established a base on the island.
Today, the island is a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming to explore its rugged terrain and wildlife. The island is also home to a number of historical sites, including the ruins of a fort built by the Spanish in the 17th century, and the grave of Alexander Selkirk.
