Penrhyn

Penrhyn is a small atoll located in the Northern Cook Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. It is the northernmost atoll of the Cook Islands, located about 1,000 km (620 miles) northeast of the main island of Rarotonga. The atoll is made up of 15 small islands, with a total land area of just over 4 square kilometers (1.5 square miles). The population of Penrhyn is approximately 400 people, who are mostly of Polynesian descent.

Penrhyn has a rich cultural history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the 12th century. The atoll was first settled by Polynesian voyagers, who named the atoll “Tongareva”, meaning “the land of the north”. The atoll was later visited by European explorers in the late 18th century, and was annexed by the British in 1888. In 1901, it was annexed by New Zealand, and is now part of the Cook Islands.
