Ittoqqortoormiit

Ittoqqortoormiit is a small town in Greenland located on the eastern coast of the country. This community of approximately 500 people is the largest settlement in the area and is the only one located in the Northeast Greenland National Park. Ittoqqortoormiit is the northernmost town in Greenland, and is located on the shores of the Kangertittivaq fjord.

This remote community is only accessible by sea or by air during the summer months, when the sea ice melts. The town is isolated from the rest of Greenland, and the nearest town is over 800 kilometers away. The population is mostly Inuit, and the town’s economy is based on fishing and hunting.

The area has a long and interesting history. The first European to visit the area was the Norwegian explorer, Fridtjof Nansen, who arrived in 1895. In 1910, the Danish government established a trading post in the area, which was later closed in 1921.

In the late 1940s, a group of Inuit families from the nearby Thule area were relocated to Ittoqqortoormiit, and the town was officially founded in 1949. The town has grown since then, and now has a school, a small hospital, and a few shops.

Ittoqqortoormiit is a unique and isolated community, and it is a great place to experience the traditional Inuit culture and way of life.
