It was also a key point of contact between the Dutch and British East India Companies. In the 19th century, the island was a major hub of the Chinese coolie trade, and many of the island's inhabitants are descended from these Chinese immigrants.
In World War II, Bintan was occupied by the Japanese, and used as a base for their operations in Southeast Asia. After the war, the island was returned to Indonesia. Today, it is a popular destination for tourists from Singapore, Malaysia, and other countries.
Bintan is a beautiful and diverse island, with much to offer visitors. From its stunning beaches to its rich cultural heritage, it is a great place to explore and experience Indonesian culture.
