Cenderawasih-Bucht

Cenderawasih Bay, or Teluk Cenderawasih, is a bay located in the Indonesian province of Papua, on the northern coast of the island of New Guinea. It is the largest bay in Indonesia and the second largest in the world. The bay is surrounded by the Bird's Head Peninsula to the west and the Bomberai Peninsula to the east, and is home to a variety of marine life, including dugongs, dolphins, manta rays, and whales.

The bay was originally inhabited by the indigenous tribes of the region, including the Dani, Asmat, and Amungme. The first European to explore the area was the Dutch explorer Jan Carstensz in 1623. From then on, the bay was a major trading hub for the Dutch East India Company. In 1828, the Dutch established a trading post in the bay and began trading with the local tribes.

During World War II, Cenderawasih Bay was the site of several battles between the Japanese and Allied forces. In 1944, the Japanese attempted to establish a naval base in the bay, but were unsuccessful. The Japanese forces were eventually defeated in 1945.

Today, Cenderawasih Bay is a popular tourist destination and is home to a number of resorts and hotels. It is also a popular spot for fishing, snorkeling, and diving. There are also a number of nature reserves in the area, including the Cenderawasih National Park and the Lorentz National Park. The bay is also home to a number of protected species, including the critically endangered leatherback turtle.
