Bantry Bay is a large natural harbour located on the south-west coast of Ireland, in the county of Cork. It is a popular tourist destination due to its stunning scenery, rugged coastline and abundance of wildlife.
Bantry Bay is a deep inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, sheltered by the Beara Peninsula. It is approximately 25 km long and 10 km wide, with a maximum depth of approximately 160 metres. The bay is home to a diverse range of seabirds and marine life, including seals, dolphins, porpoises and whales. The area around the bay is also known for its abundance of wildflowers and native plants.
The area has a long and varied history. During the 16th century, the bay was used as a safe harbour for ships travelling to and from the Spanish-controlled Netherlands. In 1690, the Battle of Bantry Bay was fought in the bay between English and French forces. In 1796, the British captured a French fleet in the bay and in 1816, the bay was the site of the first recorded lifeboat rescue in Ireland.
