Port Royal

Port Royal, located at the eastern end of Jamaica, is a former British colonial town and one of the most famous pirate havens of the Caribbean. The port is situated at the mouth of the Kingston Harbour, and is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and the Palisadoes sand spit. It was founded in 1518 by the Spanish and later taken over by the British in 1655.

Port Royal was a major trading center and the Caribbean's busiest port for nearly a century, with ships from all over the world coming to trade and conduct business. It was also home to a large population of pirates, who plied their trade in the area. The town was known for its wild and lawless atmosphere, and was often referred to as the "wickedest city in the world".

In 1692, a massive earthquake and tsunami struck Port Royal, destroying much of the town and killing over 2000 people. The town was never rebuilt and the ruins remain to this day, a reminder of the town's former glory.

Port Royal was also the site of many important historical events. In 1655, the British captured the island from the Spanish, and in 1739, Admiral Edward Vernon of the British Navy fought a battle against the Spanish in the area. In 1781, the Battle of Port Royal was fought between the British and the French, with the British ultimately winning the battle.

Today, the ruins of Port Royal are a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the ruins of the old town, and learn about the town's fascinating history. Additionally, there are several museums and other attractions in the area, including the Maritime Museum and the Port Royal Marine Park.
