Funato

Funato is a small town situated in the Iwate Prefecture of Japan. It is located in the southern part of the prefecture, about 20 kilometers from the prefectural capital of Morioka. The town is surrounded by the Kitakami and Nakatsu Rivers, and is bordered by the cities of Ninohe and Ichinoseki.

Funato has a population of about 8,000 people, and is an agricultural and fishing community. The town is known for its production of rice, as well as its many small rivers and streams. The town is also home to several historical sites, including the Funato Castle ruins and the Funato Shrine.

The town of Funato has a long history, dating back to the Edo period. During the Edo period, the area was part of the Morioka Domain and was ruled by the Nanbu Clan. In 1868, the Meiji government abolished the domain system and Funato became part of the Iwate Prefecture.

During World War II, Funato was the site of an airfield and a prisoner of war camp. The airfield was used by the Japanese military to launch air raids against Allied forces in the region. After the war, the airfield was closed and the area was designated as a historical site.
