Petra

Petra is an ancient city located in the southern Jordanian desert, approximately 240 km southwest of Amman. It is known as the “Rose City” due to the color of the sandstone rock formations that make up the majority of the ruins. The city was established around the 6th century BCE by the Nabataean Arabs, who carved monuments and tombs into the sandstone cliffs.

Petra is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is surrounded by mountains and gorges, making it an incredibly picturesque site. Visitors can explore the ancient city, which includes the Treasury, the Monastery, and the Royal Tombs. There are also many other monuments and temples to explore, as well as caves and a Roman amphitheater.

Petra has a long and rich history. It was an important trade center for the Nabataeans, and was later conquered by the Romans in 106 CE. During the Byzantine period, Petra was an important Christian center, and was later abandoned in the 7th century. It remained largely forgotten until 1812, when it was rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.

Today, Petra is one of Jordan’s most popular tourist attractions. Visitors come to explore the ruins, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and learn more about the city’s history. There are also many festivals and events held in Petra throughout the year, including the Petra Desert Marathon and the Petra Music Festival.
