Tabuaeran, also known as Fanning Island, is a coral atoll located in the central Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Line Islands in the Republic of Kiribati, and is located about 1,800 kilometres (1,118 miles) south of the Hawaiian Islands.

Tabuaeran is a roughly oval-shaped atoll, measuring about 9.6 kilometres (6 miles) in length and 5.6 kilometres (3.5 miles) in width. It has a total land area of about 4.9 square kilometres (1.9 square miles), and is surrounded by a lagoon of approximately 20 square kilometres (7.7 square miles). The atoll is made up of 13 islets, with the largest being Tabuaeran Island, located in the northern part of the atoll.

Tabuaeran has a rich history, having been first sighted by Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña in 1595. The island was later visited by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778, and was claimed by the United Kingdom in 1892. The island was annexed by the United States in 1922, and was administered as part of the US-controlled Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony until 1979. In 1979, the island was transferred to the newly formed Republic of Kiribati.

Today, Tabuaeran is home to around 600 people, mostly of Polynesian descent. The island is a popular tourist destination, with its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and abundant marine life.
