Jeju-do

Jeju-do is an island in South Korea located off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. It is the largest of Korea’s islands and has a population of just over 645,000 people. The island is known for its natural beauty, with its volcanic landscape, sandy beaches, and lush forests.

The island is home to Mount Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea. It is a dormant volcano and is a popular destination for hikers and climbers. The island also has many beaches, with some of the most popular being Hyeopjae Beach, Jungmun Beach, and Gimnyeong Beach.

Jeju-do has a long history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic period. During the Three Kingdoms period, the island was part of the Silla kingdom. During the Joseon dynasty, the island was home to many important scholars and writers, including the renowned poet Yi Sang-hwa.

The island was also the site of a massacre during the Korean War. In 1948, the South Korean government attempted to suppress a rebellion on the island, resulting in the deaths of as many as 30,000 people. The event is known as the Jeju Uprising and is remembered each year with a memorial ceremony.

Today, Jeju-do is a popular destination for tourists, with its beautiful beaches, lush forests, and unique culture. The island is also home to the Jeju World Heritage Site, which includes the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, the Manjanggul Cave, and the Lava Tubes. Visitors to the island can also explore the many museums, galleries, and other cultural attractions.
