Yangon

Yangon is the largest city and former capital of Myanmar (formerly Burma). It is located in the south of the country near the Gulf of Martaban. The city has a population of over 5 million people and is the economic and cultural center of Myanmar.

Yangon is situated at the confluence of the Yangon and Bago Rivers, and is surrounded by the Ayeyarwady Delta. The city is divided into four main districts - the downtown area, the eastern suburbs, the western suburbs, and the northern suburbs.

The downtown area is home to the city’s main commercial and financial district, as well as many of its historical and cultural sites. Notable attractions in this area include the Shwedagon Pagoda, the Sule Pagoda, and the Yangon City Hall.

The eastern suburbs are mainly residential, with some industrial areas. The western suburbs are mainly residential and include the University of Yangon, the National Museum of Myanmar, and the Yangon Zoo. The northern suburbs are mainly rural and home to many traditional villages.

In 1824, the British East India Company established a trading post in Yangon, making it the first British settlement in Burma. In 1885, the city was made the capital of British Burma, and it remained so until 1948, when the capital was moved to Naypyidaw.

During World War II, the city was occupied by the Japanese. After the war, Yangon was the site of the Panglong Agreement, which led to the independence of Burma from British rule.

Today, Yangon is a modern and vibrant city. It is a major port and commercial hub, and is home to numerous universities and colleges. It is also a popular tourist destination, with many interesting cultural and historical sites.
