The Antipodes Islands are a group of small islands located in the Southern Ocean off the south-eastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island. The islands are of volcanic origin, with the largest being the main island of Antipodes Island, measuring roughly 8 km long and 4 km wide. The other two smaller islands are Bollons Island and the much smaller Disappointment Island.
The islands are home to a variety of wildlife, including the Antipodean Albatross, the Antipodean Fur Seal, and the endemic Antipodean Snipe, which is found only on the islands. The islands are also home to a number of rare and endangered species, including the Antipodean Sea Lion, the Antipodean Rockhopper Penguin, and the Antipodean Hooker's Sea Lion.
The islands were first discovered by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642. However, the islands were not fully explored until the late 1800s, when the British explorer Robert F. Burton visited the islands and named them after their location in the Southern Hemisphere.
The islands have a rich history, as they were used as a whaling station by the Americans in the late 19th century. The islands were also used as a base by the New Zealand government during World War II, when the New Zealand Navy was based there.
The islands are now a protected nature reserve, managed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation. The islands are also a popular destination for birdwatchers, as the islands are home to a number of rare and endangered species.
The Antipodes Islands are a unique and fascinating part of New Zealand’s natural heritage, providing a glimpse into the country’s history and the unique wildlife that call the islands home.
