Garove

Garove is an island located in the Bismarck Sea in Papua New Guinea. It is the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago and is located approximately 250 kilometers east of the mainland of Papua New Guinea. The island is approximately 16 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide.

Garove is a part of the New Ireland Province and is home to several small villages, including Garove Island, Kavieng, and Namatanai. The island is surrounded by coral reefs and is a popular spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, and other water activities.

The island has a long history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the early 18th century. The island was first sighted by Europeans in 1767, when the British explorer Philip Carteret named it after his friend, Lord George Garove. In the late 19th century, the island became a trading post for traders from Europe and the United States.

During World War II, the island was occupied by the Japanese. In 1945, the Allies recaptured the island and it remained under their control until Papua New Guinea achieved independence in 1975.

Today, Garove is a popular tourist destination. The island is known for its beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and diverse wildlife. It is also home to a number of historical sites, including the ruins of the Japanese fortifications and the Garove War Cemetery, which is the final resting place for more than 1,000 soldiers who died during the war.
