Gough Island

Gough Island is a remote volcanic island located in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, and is situated around 1,400 km (870 mi) east-southeast of Tristan da Cunha and 2,000 km (1,200 mi) west of the Falkland Islands. The island is roughly triangular in shape, with a total area of 91 km2 (35 sq mi) and a coastline of around 35 km (22 mi).

Gough Island is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including birds, seals, and penguins. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its importance as a breeding ground for seabirds. It is also home to the critically endangered Tristan Albatross, the largest seabird in the world, which nests on the island.

The first recorded visit to the island was in 1505 by the Portuguese explorer Tristão da Cunha. The island was named after his navigator, Captain Gough. The island was later visited by Dutch, French, and British ships in the 17th and 18th centuries, but it was not until 1811 that the island was formally claimed by the British.

In 1871, the island was annexed by the United Kingdom, and in 1922 it was declared a Nature Reserve. The island has been uninhabited since the 1950s, when the last inhabitants were evacuated due to the harsh living conditions.

Today, Gough Island is an important scientific research station, and it is monitored by the British Antarctic Survey. The island is also home to a small military base, which is used to monitor shipping in the South Atlantic.
