Pepper-Atoll

Pepper-Atoll is an atoll in the Seychelles, located in the Indian Ocean, about 1,000 km (620 miles) east of mainland Africa. It consists of two main islands, named North and South, both of which are surrounded by a shallow lagoon. The atoll is approximately 3.2 km (2 miles) long and 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and has a total land area of just over 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²).

Pepper-Atoll is an important ecological site, as it is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, including the endangered Hawksbill turtle. The atoll is also an important nesting area for several species of seabirds, including the brown noddy and the white tern.

The atoll was first visited by Europeans in 1742, when the French explorer, Jean-François de Galaup, arrived on the island. The island was later named after a British admiral, Sir Thomas Pepper, who visited the island in 1764.

In the 19th century, Pepper-Atoll became an important trading post for the East India Company, with the first trading post being established in 1810. The island was also used as a base for the Royal Navy during the First World War.

In the 20th century, Pepper-Atoll was annexed by the British Empire and was part of the British Indian Ocean Territory until 1976, when it was returned to the Seychelles.

Today, Pepper-Atoll is a popular tourist destination, with a wide range of activities available, including diving, snorkeling, fishing, and bird watching. The island is also home to a number of luxury resorts, offering visitors a chance to experience the beauty and tranquility of the Seychelles.
