Motril is a Spanish city located in the province of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is situated on the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of the Sierra de la Contraviesa mountain range. It is the largest municipality in the province, with a population of around 82,000 people.

Motril has a long and rich history, having been founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC. It was later conquered by the Romans, Visigoths and Moors, who gave the city its current name, derived from the Arabic word “mutar”, meaning “port”. During the Middle Ages, Motril was part of the Kingdom of Granada and was a major port, especially for the export of sugar.

The city has a pleasant climate, with hot summers and mild winters. It is a popular tourist destination, with many attractions including the historic centre, the beach and the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range.
