Waigeo

Waigeo is the largest of the four main islands that make up the Raja Ampat archipelago in Indonesia. It lies in the Bird’s Head Peninsula of West Papua province to the northwest of the island of New Guinea. The island is famous for its stunning natural beauty and its diverse marine life, making it a popular destination for tourists and divers.

Waigeo is about 62 miles (100 km) long and 37 miles (60 km) wide, with a total area of 1,780 square miles (4,624 square km). The island is mountainous and has several active volcanoes, including the Gunung Meja and Gunung Payung. The highest point on the island is Mount Sibela, which rises to a height of 3,743 feet (1,142 m).

The island is home to several indigenous ethnic groups, including the Doreh, Meoswar, and Wamesa people. The majority of the population lives in small coastal villages and subsists mainly on fishing, agriculture, and the production of copra.

The island has a long history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Stone Age. The first Europeans to arrive on the island were the Portuguese in 1511. In the 19th century, the island was a Dutch colony, and it was eventually incorporated into Indonesia after the country gained independence in 1945.

Today, Waigeo is a popular destination for tourists, who come to explore its stunning natural beauty and its diverse marine life. The island is home to the Raja Ampat Marine Park, which is a popular spot for divers and snorkelers. The island is also home to a number of historical sites, including the remains of the Dutch fort at Waigeo harbor.
