Wajag Island

Wajag Island is an Indonesian island located in the Flores Sea, in the Lesser Sunda Islands archipelago. The island is located in the Nusa Tenggara Timur province, and is part of the West Manggarai Regency. It is situated approximately 16 kilometers southwest of the island of Flores.

Wajag Island has an area of approximately 5.5 square kilometers and is the largest island in the West Manggarai Regency. Its highest point is Mount Wajag, which is approximately 635 meters above sea level. The island is mostly covered in tropical rainforest and is home to a variety of wildlife, including several species of birds, reptiles, and mammals.

The island was first settled by the aboriginal Manggarai people, who still inhabit the island today. The island has a long history of trade and commerce, and was an important stop for traders from the nearby islands of Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa. In the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived on the island and established a trading post.

In the 19th century, Wajag Island was a major center of the sandalwood trade. The island was also an important stop for whalers, who stopped at the island on their way to and from the nearby whaling grounds.

During World War II, the island was occupied by the Japanese and was used as a base of operations. After the war, the island became a part of the newly independent Republic of Indonesia.

Today, Wajag Island is a popular tourist destination. The island is known for its beautiful beaches, lush tropical forests, and unique wildlife. There are several resorts on the island, as well as several dive sites, where visitors can explore the coral reefs and observe the diverse marine life.
