Goto Islands, located in the East China Sea off the coast of Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan, are a group of over 100 islands that make up the Goto Archipelago. The main islands are Fukue, Nakadori, and Nishino. The islands are known for their unspoiled natural beauty and have been designated as a part of the Saikai National Park. The islands are home to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered Ryukyu rabbit, and boast some of the clearest waters in Japan.
Geographically, the islands are situated in a horseshoe shape, with the largest island, Fukue, located in the center. The islands have an area of about 180 square kilometers and are mostly mountainous, with the highest peak, Mount Shiro, reaching an elevation of 643 meters. The climate is subtropical, with warm, humid summers and mild winters.
The Goto Islands have a long and storied history. The islands were first inhabited by the Ryukyu people in the 12th century, and were later part of the Satsuma Domain during the Edo period. During the Meiji period, the islands were incorporated into Nagasaki Prefecture. During World War II, the islands were heavily bombed by American forces, resulting in the destruction of many of the islands’ villages.
Today, the Goto Islands are a popular tourist destination, offering visitors the chance to explore the islands’ stunning natural beauty, as well as its rich cultural heritage. The islands are home to a number of historic sites, including the ruins of the Satsuma Domain’s castle, and the Takabaru Castle, which was built in the 15th century. The islands are also home to a number of shrines and temples, as well as some of Japan’s oldest churches.
