Kikaijima

Kikaijima is an island located in the Satsunan Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the Osumi Islands, and is approximately 40 kilometers north of the larger island of Amami Ōshima. It has an area of 59.57 square kilometers and a population of approximately 8,000 people.

During the Edo period, the island was part of the Satsuma Domain and was used as a base for the production of sugar cane.

In 1876, a major earthquake struck the island, causing widespread destruction and killing over 200 people. In World War II, the island was the site of a major airbase and was the target of several air raids.

Today, the economy of Kikaijima is based mainly on fishing and agriculture. The island is also a popular tourist destination, with its beautiful beaches, lush forests and unique culture. In recent years, the island has become a popular destination for eco-tourism, with many visitors coming to see the island's unique wildlife and natural environment.
