Kikaijima is an island located in the Satsunan Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the Osumi Islands, and is approximately 40 kilometers north of the larger island of Amami Ōshima. It has an area of 59.57 square kilometers and a population of approximately 8,000 people.
Kikaijima is a volcanic island, with a peak of 464 meters at the summit of Mount Ōyama. The terrain is mostly hilly, with the majority of the island covered in subtropical evergreen forest. The climate is mild and humid, with an average temperature of 20°C in summer and 10°C in winter.
Kikaijima has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It is believed that the first settlers were the descendants of the ancient Jōmon people who arrived around 3,000 years ago. During the Edo period, the island was part of the Satsuma Domain and was used as a base for the production of sugar cane.
In 1876, a major earthquake struck the island, causing widespread destruction and killing over 200 people. In World War II, the island was the site of a major airbase and was the target of several air raids.

Kikaijima has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. In spring, temperatures gradually rise and by April the island is warm and humid. During the summer months, temperatures reach an average of around 25°C and there is lots of rainfall. In autumn, temperatures gradually cool and by December the island is quite mild. Winter is generally mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C and rainfall is less frequent than in the other seasons.
