It was later taken by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and then by the Spanish in the 18th century. In the 19th century, it became a major trading center, and was then taken by the French in 1912. During World War II, Safi was the site of a major Allied victory, when the British and American forces liberated the city from the Germans.
